I have not noticed a preponderance of green issues in this forum but the following petition suggests country-wide relevance. It asks no 10 to make it mandatory to include consideration of habitat and niches for bird and bat species within all new planning developments.
A Stockport group of planning objectors I belonged to found that the Council need only look for signs of roosting [from the ground looking up] before cutting down perfectly healthy mature trees to make way for bricks and concrete. They did not need to consider that a thriving bat population would have its foraging area decimated - and birds are off planners' radar altogether anyway.
The Open Spaces Society is also asking people to send letters to their candidates to get their response to the OSS 10-Point Plan. BTW, OSS works to protect urban as well as rural spaces: www.oss.org.uk

Is it not already unlawful to disturb bat habitats?
I am not sure what you understand by 'habitat', Hairyloon. To me, it means living space but under present laws only roosting/nesting space is protected. If planning officers or arboricultural inspectors cannot find tell-tale evidence of roosts/nests looking up into the trees they will clear the tree for felling.
It is hard work to make decision-makers understand that protecting nature is protecting people/property/investments. It is heartening that an individual started this petition because it emphasises that we are all decision-makers and can do any one of a host of actions implied by the word.
